Week 5 - Your LU Program

One of my goals for you this semester is that you become familiar with the Lindenwood School of Education and what you can expect over the next 4 years of your life. In order to do this, you need to be very familiar with the Lindenwood website, and in particular, the School of Education section of the website. The following link should take you to the School of Education section of the website. http://www.lindenwood.edu/academics/education/ Please browse the site and find something new that you either didn't know before or that you didn't know was on the website. You only have to post one reply this week. It is not necessary that you reply to a classmate. HOWEVER, you must find something on the website that is different than what the previous posts have indicated. Here are a few things to remember while you are looking for information: 1. It must be related to either Education or your Secondary Field of Study. 2. It can be a form you found on the Guide to Undergraduate Teacher Education, but you must specify what the form is about and when you would use it. 3. It can be something about Student Teaching, but be specific about what you learned. 4. It can be something about Foliotek, but be specific about what you learned. 5. It can be something about CBASE or Praxis, but be specific about what you learned. 6. You will not submit information about a form that another student has already posted.

You may also find something that will help you with your LU program on PCCommon in the School of Education Folder. You can either use something found on PCCommon or on the LU website for your blog comment.

See you guys next week!

  1. There is a page in the guide that has the conceptual frameworkn for the school of education. It talks about teaching and leading as an art and a science. There is a diagram and it has three cog wheels (it's on page 6) one being the initial entrance into the school of education with your previous time in school as experience. Then there is a science cog which has different types of knowledge. The third cog is the art cog and it combines creativity, organization, and delivery. I had never looked at this part of the website and I think it's cool that they mapped out what the framework of being a good teacher is.

  2. To find information on the CBASE exam follow these steps:
LU education home page>teacher education>student teaching>CBASE test info.

I found out that the test lasts for about 4 hours, and I should arrive about 7:30 a.m. in the Leadership Room in Spellmann. I need to bring a form of identification (i.e. driver's license, student id, or other picture id), but pencils will be provided. Most importantly, I discovered study guides for geography, math, and science. Now, I will definitely be prepared for the upcoming test on Saturday!

  3. I didn't know I could go on the website and find a paper that I could print that tells me all the requirements I need to become certified as an elementary school teacher by the state of missouri. I honestly didnt know I could print off the page in the first place or that it was on the website period.

  4. What i didnt know and am happy to find out is that for secondary education for history teachers, we only have to have one math class for our undergrad. im pretty pumped about that because im really bad at math!!!

  6. Under the certification I learned that in order for Lindenwood to recommend a student teacher for initial Missouri certification each student has to complete the degrees for all the education courses, complete an application degree about one semester before you plan to graduate, submit your transcript so your credits and degrees and transfer, submit passing PRAXIS scores to the Lindenwood University Education Division,Cumulative grade point average must be 2.5 or better as well as a 2.5 or better in area of certification, complete an application for initial Missouri Teacher Certification,a grade of A or B in student teaching,Identix fingerprinting must be completed and be sent to deparment of elementary and secondary education.

  7. I found the announcements sheet, that gives all of the dates that scores and things must be done. I did not know where to find this at all so it will be very helpful. I was also surprised to know that I am already doing things that are required for admittance into the teacher education program, but I also have a long way to go as well!

  8. I didn't know that you could print off the application forms for student teaching. It's nice to know that the website will help me when I get to student teach.

  9. Hey, guys! One of the things I really like about this week's blog assignment is that everyone must read all of the blogs just to make sure you don't repeat someone else. Those of you who post early might miss out on some excellent website finds. You might want to check back early next week to read about what everyone else found.
Sounds like you are finding good information that will help through CBase & Student Teaching. I am particularly thrilled that Sarah Stewart mentioned the conceptual frameworks - Teaching and Leading as an Art & a Science. I try to model that and show you guys a few things about the art and science of teaching. Effective teachers really have mastered both!

  10. As i read one of the paragraphs about the clock how its art and science. That these two special components add up to make one great thing. I believe its true for teaching. You have two main components..you have the teacher and the course. With the teacher, they are there to have a student understand the concepts of the course. When the teacher and course combine, it helps the student to grow in the knowledge of what is being teached. These two things, make a student great. Its the "art" and "science" behind the learning and experience.

  11. one thing i learned and was a little confused by it was the fact that at lindenwood uinversity the students take the praxis at the end of their 4 years compared to my school i transferred from last year(university of wisconsin-whitewater) where we took the praxis at the beginning of our college career. im sure the test might be a little different here than it is there but that was something that caught my attention when i first got here

  12. Guys - Let me explain Jordan's comment - There are two different kinds of Praxis tests. Praxis One is like our CBase, which is why at Jordan's last school they took the Praxis test in the beginning of the college career. Praxis Two is the test that is taken at the end of the 4 years.

By the way - It was great to see so many of you last night at the LU football game! I didn't realize so many of you were cheerleaders, dancers, band members, and athletes! The game was great - we won!!!

  13. There is a whole page talking about the codes of ethics. I read all of them and some of them are common sense but some of them i would not have guessed. if anyone needed to know some of the rules this would be the page to go to learn about all of the ethics that future teachers need to follow.

  14. I want to begin by saying… I wish PC common was easier to follow! There is a TON of useful information hidden on PC Common. I wish I could figure out which one of these links would lead to the planning forms.  I have looked under every category in PC Common – School of Education’s main page? Could someone be of assistance? They have advisor schedules posted in a few of the different categories.
For me this assignment has generated more questions. As I am searching for things I’d want to know, it is making me think about answers to questions I cannot find. I actually enjoy Math! Originally I was leaning toward Elementary Education. However, I would like to look into Secondary Math, but I cannot get to the forms you showed us last week? Then, I began to jump the gun and explore the Master programs particularly, Arts in Education with an area of emphasis in Special Reading K-12. Now I would like to know if Lindenwood offers an emphasis in Mathematics. Again cannot find the answer.

  15. I found it! School of Education/Program Planning Worksheets (MinorRevisions 12-10-08)/Department of Teacher Education/Teacher Certification Undergraduate/Teacher Ed UndergradMiddle5-9/Math.doc
More questions are generating here!! I can see that I REALLY need help getting myself in the right direction. Over the BIG picture not just Undergraduate, I want to know what my options are and what path may be best for me.

  16. I found the Code of Ethics pdf link. It spelled out just what was expected of Student Teacher/Observers in the classroom. While one part of me is sad that we actually have to have this spelled out in written form, as to my mind the vast majority of this is self explanitory, it is nice to have it all written down so there's no confusion.

I'd also like to thank Liz for her comments on the study guides. I know that they will be a huge help to me, especially the math one. Unlike Marybeth I'm horrible at math and need all the help I can get!

  17. With regard to what Marybeth said about PC Common, I certainly agree. I would suggest that it at least be re-ordered to have the professor's last names first. Have it be "Bishop, M." instead of "MBishop". I mean, how many of us actually know our professor's first name without digging out our syllabus? Granted, sometimes we do; but sometimes we don't and it can get confusing finding a professor's page as it is now.

  18. I didn't realize that Lindenwood had a doctorate program for education. That's kinda neat to me. I won't have to go somewhere else for that. The program is for anyone who wants to further or"maximize"( as they put it) their instructional skills.

  19. I was origionally not going to teach high school. I was going to teach college, and therefore, I didn't need to have a major or minor in education. All I needed was my English degree. Now that I have decided to pick up a minor in Secondary Education I learned that there is an extra history class that I have to have for my gen eds. That was not pleasant information!!!!

  20. When I was searching around the website I found a checklist that needs to of information that must be finished in order to get placed for your student teaching semester. I knew that there were certain things that I needed but now that I know that there is a simple checklist it makes me feel more knowledgeable and ready for the upcoming years.

  21. I like blythe clubb's posting about the information on the page describing the Clock tower as a form of "art" and "science". I thought that was so cool cause I am learning about that right now in psychology of teaching and learning but didn't know that we had a structure on campus that showed a symbolic connection to the education program.

  22. When i was looking around i found that the site provided a code of ethics that lists everything you need to have done in order to become a teacher, pretty helpful i think

  23. WOW!!! I had no idea that students involved in ATC have to complete 1,600 hours of coursework! That is abosolutley crazy. So that means that if you ever wanted to participate in a sport, its pretty much impossible. I have had thoughts of becoming an athletic trainer but that would over rule my football schedule.

  24. marybeth- PC comman really confused me too. im still not really good at finding stuff on there yet, still a lost science to me. But my roomie is pretty good at finding stuff so i usually just ask him and he knows where to find it

  25. Something that i found but was a little confused about was the requirements for secondary social studies education. I was told that i had to take two math classes and the website says i only need one. This would be dreat becuase i struggle with math a lot

  26. i found a lot of useful stuff but i wish i could find something that would go into detail about add ons and stuff like that. its really confusing to me. i want an add on of something with health but i want it added on to my elementary ed degree.

  27. i did not even know there was a student education link to click on!i thought it was very helpful when clicking on the teacher education link and there were several links that would take you to important sites for portfolio, deadlines etc.
